le Petit-Bornand
A bit of a hard time finding my way out of Geneve, but have now
climbed most of the way, I think, up the Gorge des Eveau to La
Clusaz, a nice place that I visited with Gabe in '89. The hostel
is closed there, so may continue over the Col de Aravis (5,000
ft) to Flumet and find a gite d'etape there.
La Clusaz
Wrong, it was
climbing all the way here. The town was as I
remembered it, full of vacationers enjoying the hiking,
parapatete and luge d'ete. I didn't stop at all, but continued
over Aravis, the first really hard climb of the trip for me.
Flumet
Really splurging here at the Hotel Panoramic, where bed,
breakfast and dinner is $30, but watching the sun turn the summit
of Mont Blanc pink from the terrace was worth it. Besides,
there's no hostel here. Dinner started with green soup, then
locally caught trout with potatoes, then the plateau de fromages,
including the local Roblechon, which is so good it's banned from
the US, then a pastry dessert. Tomorrow looks really good
with 50 miles of climbing to 5,300 ft on a very small road. Tried
sending from the Col de Aravis, but signal not strong enough.
